Assessment

Ordained ministry is a public ministry and a key part of the training for ordination is ensuring that those who are ordained have the right skills, knowledge, Christian maturity for that ministry. Assessments on the course are designed to aid in ensuring this – but also they are a key part of the learning on the course. Assessments give those in training the chance to clarify and develop their own skills, knowledge and approaches to real ministerial tasks such as preaching, worship leading and mission.

Assessments on All Saints modules are not just about writing essays. A central part of the All Saints approach is that it is about preparing people for Christian ministry, and we use a range of assessment approaches that are designed to help students grow and develop in knowledge, skills and maturity for Christian ministry. So while many assessments involve an element of written work, they also use live and recorded presentation, group work and a variety of tasks that are related to skills for Christian ministry.

To give some examples,

Worship & Preaching is assessed by putting together an act of worship and then reflecting on it and by a video’d sermon with a commentary on how you prepared it.

Old and New Testament are assessed by in-depth study of passage that is then applied in putting together a sermon on that passage.

Service & Leadership is assessed by

  • a case study on an issue in church related to church growth, mission or conflict
  • a group presentation on collaborative leadership ad ministry
  • an individual interview discussing Christian leadership and your approach to it

Local Mission is assessed by a survey of the mission opportunities in a specific church context and a presentation on how a specific mission initiative could be taken forward. In many cases this has led churches to put in place a new initiative for mission.
